We should try to find the cause of criminal activity and try to prevent crime before it occurs.Sentencing in the United States goes back from the middle ages and has been changed drastically. In the Middle Ages, “forfeiture of land and property became the accepted method of punishing a wrongdoer” (Wallace, 2008).

In the fifteenth century, punishments consisted of executions, branding, torture, and flogging. In the sixteenth century a person who was convictedof crimes had to do hard labor work for a punishment.

In 1776, around American Revolution, imprisonment became an option. In the Civil War times, prisoners were forced to work in private or public institutions for either no money or very little. They had to make clothes, shoes and furniture. Ever since the Civil War, the meaning of sentencing has made some huge changes.
