You are a manager responsible for introducing new employees to their teammates. Having recently accepted a promotion, you have decided to write a three-page memo for the new manager who will replace you. The new manager is an accountant with limited background in group communication.

Write a 2-3 page memo based on the scenario. In this memo, draw upon both the personal and workplace experience of your Learning Team members. Refer to real-life examples to complete the following:

Analyze barriers that may exist in group communication.

Describe techniques to overcome those barriers and enhance group communication.

Explain the role of conflict in effective group communication.

Group Communication As part of your new position as manager, you will be introducing new employees to their teammates. To do this you have to establish a good line of communication between the members of the team. Accomplishing this task can be difficult as there are many barriers to overcome as well as conflicts in group communication. It is important that you be able to identify the different barriers and conflicts and have ways to overcome them. Barriers in Communication Within both the workplace and personal life, barriers in communication can affect the effectiveness of the message one is trying to get across. There are a range of barriers that can affect these communications which include: Interpersonal issues Physical distractions Meaning barriers , also known as semantic barriers These three barriers can create conflict within communication if they are not effectively worked around. Interpersonal barriers are created due to many causes that make the message unable to be sent to the receiver. These causes are not due to the environment in which the communication is presented but instead due to barriers that includes but is not limited to “lack of trust, personality clashes, a bad reputation, stereotypes/prejudices, etc.” (Schermerhorn, Hunt, Osborn & Uhl- Blen, 2010, p. 259). When there is already a previous conflict or dislike among individuals, the ability to get an effective communication across will be highly affected. For example, if the receiver of the message views the sender of the message as an individual that is not a reliable source of information; the receiver of the message may not provide his or her full attention to the communication. This will ultimately reduce the amount of information that is received. This is because of a problem called selective listening. Selective listening reduces an individual’s ability to hear information that does not match his or her preconceived notions (Schermerhorn, Hunt, Osborn & Uhl-Blen, 2010). The receiver of the message is not the only fault in interpersonal barriers. The sender of the communication may be at fault of filtering the message because of a personal conflict between the sender and receiver. This may cause the sender of the message to leave out critical information that is important to the communica
